BIOGRAPHY

Mike Aguirre's deep and abiding faith in the hope of America grows out of his personal experience. In 1966 he left home at age 16. He worked himself though his last year of high school. Over the next twenty years he graduated from Arizona State University, where he served as student body president; graduated from UC Berkeley School of Law, where he served as student body vice-president and student body president; served as an Assistant United States Attorney and Assistant Counsel to the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, investigating organized crime and pension fraud; taught a national award winning course in the History Department at the University of Southern California; and graduated with a Masters Degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Mike has never forgotten where he came from and why he has worked so hard to be a source of hope for the people of San Diego.

In building a successful private practice, Mike recovered more than a quarter-billion dollars for victims of pension and stock fraud. He has prevailed in damage actions against such defendants as Bear Stearns, Price Water House Coopers, Prudential Bache and other national corporations. He represented the victims of the California Energy crisis in 2000, when he sued Enron.
Mike's work as a trial attorney has been repeatedly recognized by his peers. In 2001, Mr. Aguirre was recognized for his outstanding trial work by the Lawyers for Public Justice when they selected him as a Trial Lawyer of the Year Finalist. In 2005 he was selected by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the TOP 100 Lawyers in California. In 2006 he was selected as one of the Top Attorneys in a poll conducted by the San Diego Daily Transcript. In addition, Californians Aware bestowed the City Attorney with its first Light of Day awards, recognizing individuals who promote greater accountability and transparency in government. In 2004 Mike passed the qualifying exam to become a Certified Fraud Examiner.

Mike devoted a substantial amount of practice to public interest work which included Voting Rights and Civil Rights cases. In 1993 Mike successfully defended the United Farm Workers in the trial Cesar Chavez gave his life fighting in Yuma, Arizona.

The City Attorney is a marathon runner. As of 2008, he has run a total of 23 marathons, including all 10 Rock n' Roll Marathons in San Diego. Mr. Aguirre is the father of two adult children, Emilie Aguirre, a graduate of Princeton University and Arthur Aguirre a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder.
